Make creamy, smooth, and fluffy American vanilla buttercream frosting quickly. This recipe is simple, uses basic ingredients, and holds its shape well for piping decorations on cakes and cupcakes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Place the softened butter in a large bowl or stand mixer. Beat the butter on medium speed until it is light and creamy, about 3 minutes.
  2. Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing on low speed until combined after each addition. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
  3. Add the vanilla extract and 2 tablespoons of heavy cream or milk. Beat on medium-high speed for 3 to 5 minutes until the frosting is light and fluffy.
  4. If the frosting seems too thick for spreading or piping, add the remaining cream or milk, one teaspoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency. Add the pinch of salt and mix briefly to combine.
  5. Use immediately to frost cakes, cupcakes, or cookies.

Notes

  • For the best texture, ensure your butter is truly softened but not melted.
  • If you need a very stable frosting for warm weather or detailed piping, use slightly less liquid or chill the frosting for 15 minutes before using.
  • This recipe makes enough frosting for one 8-inch layer cake or about 18 standard cupcakes.
