Make an authentic, creamy Italian Tiramisu dessert without baking. This recipe uses simple steps for coffee-soaked ladyfingers and a rich mascarpone cream, perfect for making ahead.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup strong brewed espresso or coffee, cooled
  • 2 tablespoons coffee liqueur or dark rum (optional)
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 8 ounces mascarpone cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 24 to 30 ladyfingers (Savoiardi biscuits)
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder, for dusting

Instructions

  1. Prepare the coffee dip: Combine the cooled espresso and coffee liqueur (if using) in a shallow dish. Set aside.
  2. Make the mascarpone cream: In a large bowl, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Set aside.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat the softened mascarpone cheese, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy. Do not overmix.
  4. Gently fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture until just combined. This creates your creamy mascarpone layer.
  5. Assemble the tiramisu: Quickly dip one side of each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture. Do not soak them too long or they will become soggy.
  6. Arrange a single layer of dipped ladyfingers in the bottom of an 8×8 inch baking dish or a similar-sized serving dish.
  7. Spread half of the mascarpone cream mixture evenly over the ladyfingers.
  8. Repeat the process: Create a second layer of dipped ladyfingers on top of the cream.
  9. Spread the remaining mascarpone cream over the second layer of ladyfingers.
  10. Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap. Chill the tiramisu in the refrigerator for at least 6 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to set and blend.
  11. Before serving, dust the top generously with unsweetened cocoa powder using a fine-mesh sieve. Slice and serve cold.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use freshly brewed, strong espresso.
  • If you skip the alcohol, add 1 teaspoon of almond extract to the coffee dip for depth.
  • This is a great make ahead dessert; it tastes best the day after assembly.
  • Use a square dish for easy slicing into uniform portions.
