You can make this addictive sweet and salty toffee bark with just four simple ingredients. This recipe delivers the perfect crunch and rich, buttery toffee layer everyone loves during the holidays. It is quick, requires no candy thermometer, and is ideal for gifting.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sleeve (about 43) saltine crackers
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Optional: 1/2 cup chopped nuts or coarse sea salt for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer covering the entire sheet.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the butter and brown sugar. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Once boiling, let it boil for exactly one minute without stirring further.
  3. Pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the saltine crackers, making sure to coat them completely.
  4. Bake for 5 minutes. The toffee will bubble slightly. Remove the sheet from the oven.
  5. Immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee layer. Let the chocolate sit for 5 minutes to soften.
  6. Spread the melted chocolate evenly across the crackers using an offset spatula. If you are using toppings, sprinkle them over the melted chocolate now.
  7. Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour, or until the chocolate is completely firm.
  8. Once set, break the toffee bark into irregular pieces. Store in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, use salted butter in the toffee mixture.
  • If you prefer milk chocolate or dark chocolate, substitute the semi-sweet chips with your favorite variety.
  • This recipe is excellent for cookie exchanges and makes a wonderful homemade gift.
