Ingredients
Scale
12 ounces fresh cranberries
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup water
1/2 cup fresh orange juice
1 teaspoon orange zest
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Instructions
Rinse the fresh cranberries under cold water and pick out any soft berries.
Combine the sugar and water in a medium saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves completely. This creates your simple syrup.
Add the fresh cranberries, orange juice, orange zest, and cinnamon to the saucepan.
Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to maintain a gentle simmer. Cook for about 10 to 15 minutes.
Stir occasionally. The sauce is done when most of the cranberries have burst and the sauce has thickened slightly.
Remove the pan from the heat. The sauce will thicken more as it cools.
Pour the cranberry sauce into a serving dish or airtight container.
Chill for at least 1 hour before serving to allow the flavors to set. This makes a great make-ahead Thanksgiving side dish.
Notes
You can prepare this cranberry orange sauce up to 5 days ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator.
For a richer flavor, substitute half of the water with orange juice.
If you prefer a smoother texture, you can pulse the finished sauce briefly with an immersion blender, but leaving the whole berries intact gives the best texture contrast.
