You can make these incredibly simple 3-ingredient butter cookies with just flour, butter, and sugar. They bake up buttery, crisp, and melt in your mouth. This is the ultimate quick dessert for beginner baking or fast afternoon tea snacks.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and powdered sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy. You do not need a mixer for this step.
  3. Gradually mix in the flour until a soft dough forms. Do not overmix the dough.
  4. Roll the dough into small balls or press it into a shallow pan. If you prefer, you can roll the dough into a log and slice it into uniform cookies.
  5. Place the cookies on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about one inch apart. You can press a fork lightly onto the top of each cookie for a classic look.
  6. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. These cookies brown quickly.
  7. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use high-quality butter.
  • If the dough feels too soft to handle, chill it for 15 minutes before shaping.
  • Dust cooled cookies with extra powdered sugar for presentation.
  • This recipe is naturally a no egg cookie recipe.
